So, how's the weather in Vietnam? Hot and humid. It usually rains each day - sometimes a lot and sometimes a little bit. So, heat + humidity = sultry conditions. That's why I say, three showers per day - one in the morning and one before bedtime. The third shower is the rain. It's a good thing I'm from the South because it reminds me of back home. Of course, this is one of the reasons I left. Dry season starts in October.
Most everything is done outside or in un-airconditioned buildings. Strangely enough, the buildings do not have central AC, just individual units in the rooms / offices. So if you go into the hallway, or even to the bathrooom, you start to sweat. I have a lot of opportunities to sweat and I take advantage of each one of them. Staying hydrated is a problem on some days. I eat most of my meals outside and my classroom has windows and ceiling fans. Not kidding. The only place for AC is my office and the dorm. Never been so thankful in all my life.
In contrast, there is no heat in any of the buildings or offices, including my dorm. So winter could get interesting. I've been told that it doesn't get frigid in Vietnam during the winter. How bad can it be, we are fairly near the eqautor? Looks like I will find out. So, I may be teaching in a jacket and sleeping in one too. But right now, cold is more like a dream.
Wonderful descriptions of your experiences! I'm not sure exactly where you are located, but because I was wondering "how bad can the heat really be?" I looked up a couple of places on "accuweather". Zounds! Anywhere from Real Feel of 105 to 120! BTW, Karen will be in our Dinner for 8 group this Fall.
ReplyDeletePerhaps I need to mail you some more deoderant :)

We bathe more frequently in the United States than people in other countries. What is the local "personal hygiene culture" like there in Viet Nam?
ReplyDelete@Kathy,What is "hygiene"? We have no worries about such alien concept in Vietnam
ReplyDelete@Mark: By the way, did you fill up your suitcases with imodium?
Unsure about the personal hygiene culture in VN. Not sure that I want to know. Yes, I brought some tums, gas relief, and a bottle of immodium. I have used all three of them!
